A virtuous sleep circle

“Collaborative effort among government, business and civil society is necessary to scale the circular economy and drive down emissions. Only through collective investment in and commitment to circular practices can we shape a more sustainable, resilient future.”

Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum.

The global economy was only 8.6% circular in 2019, according to the annual Circularity Gap report, shrinking from 9.1% just two years earlier.

The truth is CO2 emissions, natural resource extraction, and processing—around 50% of current greenhouse gas emissions—is increasing. Demand for raw materials under a ‘business-as-usual’ scenario is predicted to double by 2050.

Consumer waste and recycling is a broken system. The undeniable issue is that we have created a disposable culture. The bed industry is a case in point. The harsh reality is that there is systemic problem with how mattresses are designed and made, and no amount of recycling will fix it.

We need to abolish the idea of perpetual economic growth, and to include environmental and ethical costs into the metrics when assessing viability of products and processes – a good all-round deal is circular – by definition and by design.

To reverse these negative trends, governments, technologists, and entrepreneurs must embrace and prioritize the circular transition.

At Ammique, as well as creating our high tech mattress-free beds, we are developing new business models. These revolve around a circular system of design, manufacture and distribution that will change how beds are made and used worldwide. We welcome collaboration to build a cleaner and greener future together.
