Regenerative awakening

Tom Szaky, CEO of Terracycle: “I think recycling, and I say this as a recycling company, is not the answer to garbage. It’s an answer to the symptom of garbage, maybe the best way to manage waste, but I think we have to go much deeper and enable an economy where garbage doesn’t exist.”

Promoting features such as recyclable, biodegradable and “compostable” might appeal to popular wisdom, however they might prove to be anything but wise. The fact is that most of the non-recovered waste will end up in landfill, and the biodegradable and “compostable” material amongst them, will decompose and produce a powerful greenhouse gas – methane.

Irrespective of preconceived ideas and logical fallacies such as “natural is best” it is essential that quantifiable measurements are used to make informed decisions. We must be guided by facts rather than by unsubstantiated opinion or beliefs (no matter how sincerely held those beliefs might be).

To quantify the total environmental impact of any product, we need to assess its life cycle. Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) determine a product’s sustainability. Combined with design and systems thinking, companies offering quality products that are functionally superior, engineered to last and adaptive in form will be the winners in the race to the top.

We are living through a time of turbulence and transition, and we need to be able to differentiate as never before. As old systems based on over consumption of throwaway, poorly designed products begin to buckle and shift, new systems based on longevity, high quality products and value will emerge to challenge the status quo. This where the exciting new opportunities will be found.

A new generation of durable, and lifelong products created by innovative companies, like Ammique, that have adopted new business models are rising. Using over 90% reprocessed material for our plastic components we have generated a long-term use for plastic waste in a world-beating product with an estimated functional life of over 250 years.

There is an increasingly strong appetite for innovative products like Ammique. Products that benefit people, protect the planet, and provide prosperity for everyone involved – by design. No short-term fixes, no conceit, and no deception.

Economies can be rebuilt in a way that champions inclusivity and welcomes diversity. Public and political will for a more circular economy is strengthening. Sustainability Spinners, Climate Change Makers, Circularity Gap Fillers, Clean Tech Transmitters and all manner of Jolly Green Giant Investors seem to be spawning in money oceans, amassing in large pools everywhere.

Now is the perfect time for them to let those pools flow to innovative companies with the most radical, circular, and sustainable solutions. Ammique is capital efficient, technically feasible to scale, and has a clear value creation proposition.
