“Operating sustainably is a vitally important topic for the next generation of hotel employees, owners and managers, and this book provides a practical introduction to the environmental and social issues facing the industry. With strategies and examples of how these are being tackled that every hotel can learn from, this is essential reading for all students and future leaders so that all hoteliers can play their part in creating a better world.”

—Wolfgang M. Neumann, Chair, Sustainable Hospitality Alliance WTTC (1)

From the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance WTTC, Economic Impact Report:

Emerging trends: Travellers are showing a preference to travel to less crowded and even unfamiliar destinations. With an increased interest in exploring secondary destinations and nature, travelers have become more committed to sustainability, which is affecting their travel choices as well as shining a brighter light on wellness and overall health, driving them to seek out wellness experiences. (2i)

Building Back Better: Sustainably & Inclusive: There is a clear demand from a significant group of global hotel brands to develop sustainability criteria, by the industry for the industry, which will encourage all businesses in hospitality to begin their sustainability journeys, especially those struggling to take the first step. The result is a set of 12 fundamental, globally aligned, pre-competitive sustainability criteria that all hotels can and should implement as a bare minimum, and that serve as a stepping-stone to more complex schemes. (2ii)

Recommendations (3): The latest 2022 report reviewed both literature and destinations and identified a range of concepts and actions which can support destinations in becoming more resilient and sustainable. Although each case is unique, some of the common themes identified point to the importance of the following concepts:

• Developing successful governance models.

• Ensuring ownership, legitimacy, and transparency.

• Developing destination shared value projects.

• Crisis preparedness
